Project Three
Inspired by similar events in Hong Kong, Melbourne and Tokyo, ICP Principal Iain Dawson conceived the MOTEL Art Fair as a vibrant winter activity to utilise local accommodation and showcase regional artists during tourism lulls.
MOTEL Art Fair activated the unique retro Motel spaces along the far south coast while championing local artistic talent.
Highlighting the event's role in supporting regional artists, Dawson emphasised the platform it provides beyond traditional gallery exhibitions. By exclusively featuring artists from the immediate region, the fair aimed to spotlight local creativity, foster economic pathways and broader exposure.
Taking place annually, the fair has grown in popularity and exhibiting space is now competitively sought, with each artist showcasing their works for sale in a separate room. This setup allowed visitors to explore diverse artworks within the intimate setting of motel rooms, creating an immersive and dynamic experience akin to strolling through a curated series of galleries at a traditional art fair.
MOTEL Art Fair was a highly commended Innovation & Resilience Project at the 2020 Museums & Galleries of NSW IMAGINE Awards.
